Dwell — Your Life's Rhythm

Last updated: March 15, 2026

Short version: Dwell does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. Your saved places and visit history are stored on your device and, if you choose, backed up to your own private iCloud. We have no server, no account, and no visibility into your data.

No Data Collection

Dwell does not collect any personal information. Your saved places, geofences, and visit history are stored entirely on-device in a local database. Nothing is sent to external servers, and we have no visibility into your data.

Location Access

Dwell requests Always On location permission so it can detect when you arrive at and depart from your saved places, even when the app is in the background. Your location is processed entirely on your device using system geofencing. Raw GPS coordinates are never stored — only the time you entered and exited each saved place.

What the App Stores Locally

  • Your saved places (name, coordinates, geofence radius, icon, color, goal hours, enabled flag)
  • Visit records (place, arrival time, departure time)
  • App settings and preferences

That is the complete list. Step counts, driving durations, and GPS paths are never written to the database. All stored data lives only on your device. Deleting the app removes it entirely.

Notifications

Dwell can send local notifications to summarize your time at a place after you leave. These notifications are scheduled on-device and are never routed through external servers.

iCloud Sync (Optional)

If you enable iCloud Sync in Settings, Dwell backs up its local database to your private iCloud ubiquity container. This container is part of your personal iCloud storage — it is not accessible to us. The backup travels encrypted over Apple's infrastructure and is visible only to you and your other devices signed in to the same Apple ID. iCloud Sync is off by default and can be disabled at any time.

Apple Health — Step Tracking (Optional)

If you enable Step Tracking in Settings, Dwell requests read-only access to your step count from Apple Health. Steps are queried live each time you view a location and displayed on screen. They are never written to Dwell's database, never cached, and never transmitted anywhere. Dwell does not write any data to Apple Health. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Dwell.

Motion — Driving Time (Optional)

If you enable Driving Time in Settings, Dwell queries your device's motion coprocessor (CoreMotion) to estimate how much of your day was spent driving. This value is computed entirely on-device, displayed on the Elsewhere card, and then discarded — it is never written to Dwell's database, never cached, and never transmitted anywhere. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Motion & Fitness → Dwell.

No Third-Party SDKs or Analytics

Dwell contains no advertising SDKs, analytics frameworks, crash reporters, or any other third-party code that could collect or transmit data.

Data Export & Control

The database is yours. You can export your data at any time via Settings → Export Database. It is a standard SQLite file, so you can read every byte. You can also delete all your data at any time from within the app.
